St. John's Church became the third and current owner of the Green-Meldrim House on December 30, 1943. When it became known earlier that year that the house was available for purchase, the idea of obtaining the mansion and converting it to a parish house and rectory for St. John's was conceived. The Rev. Ernest Risley was rector when the whirlwind community-wide campaign to raise the funds was undertaken. The dream became reality within six weeks, as the financial support of both the congregation and a number of other Savannahians poured forth. The purchase sum was $42,105. Mr. Risley was involved in the careful supervision of the restoration of the property during his service at St. John's. In 1974 the house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 1976 it was made a National Historic Landmark.

The church is open for tours on a limited schedule, Tuesdays and Fridays 11am-1pm, unless the church is being used for services. Phone the church office at 912.232.1251 to confirm that the church will be open on the day you wish to visit. .  Church tours are free to all with donations welcome.  Proceeds directly support those in our community needing assistance.
